Great 3D projector at a bargain price, February 3, 2012 – By Daniel Gould “Dan” (Georgia)
Recently upgraded to the Optoma HD33 from the Optoma HD66 and am thrilled with all the improvements in picture quality and better 3D projection. I realy liked the HD66 but am amazed at how much better the HD33 performs, for the money it is a great bargain. The colors are great and the picture quality very detailed and the 3D is better and brighter than in the HD66 The backlit remote is very user friendly, well organized and great to use in a darkened room. I also like the menu setup, nicely organized. I held off a few months before giving my review to give it a thorough check and going over. I highly reccomend this excellent projector.
A Very Nice 3D Projector, January 24, 2012 – By JC (San Francisco, CA United States)
Cautions: this review is unavoidably subjective.
After viewing other good and bad comments about this projector, I decided to give it try.
It worked right out of the box. I didn’t even bother going through the user manual.
This is the setup I used:
Optoma HD33
Panasonic BDT-110 3D blu-ray player
Optoma BG-ZD101 DLP-link 3D glasses
Ultraclear HD DLP-link compatible 3D glasses
Mediabridge Ultra Series Cat 2 certified HDMI cable
Screen – just the plain interior paint wall
The room was dark with some ambient light. With a projection distance around 15 feet and the projector on a coffee table, I can get a viewing size ranging from 120″ to 131″ on the wall with ease by adjusting the Zoom and Focus. I only need to adjust the V keystone a little bit to get the perfect rectangle image. The image is acceptable to me, giving that there is no screen yet. I actually want to said that’s impressive. Played Avatar, and then the Ultimate Wave Tahiti with 3D on. The field depth is so good, and like others said, “… on your face”, “can almost touch …” etc. The brightness and contrast are comparable to some LCD TV in movie/cinema mode (meaning darker than in standard mode).
Played the same things in the morning with some ambient light not too strong though(this is very subjective). The picture quality is comparable to some rear projection big screen TV (meaning not great, but somewhat acceptable).
Can’t wait to see what a screen can do to improve the picture quality. Stay tune.
As with any DLP projector, rainbow effect does exist on this one as well, but not that noticeable to me, and only appears occasionally. You have to move your head fast to see it. It’s not distracting.
Fan noise is decent; you can notice especially at night and when the volume is low. Didn’t distract me.
The projector comes with a transmitter for RF-based 3D glasses, but no glasses. The projector supports both types
of glasses, the DLP-link type and the RF-based type. Personally, I prefer the DLP-link type, because it’s very simple to work with. I have tried two brands of this type of glasses, and both worked well with this projector.
In summary, a very nice entry level 3D projector mostly suitable for watching 2D or 3D movies at night without much ambient light.
